Heavy moms-to-be may have to opt for C-section

MUMBAI: Women who gain more than 16 kg weight during pregnancy may have an increased risk of forceps, vacuum extraction and C-section delivery. Indian doctors say that it is normal for women to gain up to 11 kg during pregnancy, but the new research clearly suggests that too much gain could spell trouble for the mother and child.

According to the study published in Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, a journal published in Norway, the mode of delivery depends on the weight of the moms-to-be. A pregnant woman with a body-mass index of 40 is sure to have a surgical or C-section delivery. Dr. Nils-Halvdan Morken from the University of Bergen in Norway who led this study said in a press release put out by the university, Women who gained 16 kg or more while pregnant significantly increased the risk of forceps, vacuum extraction and C-section-a finding that was independent of BMI prior to pregnancy.''

The researchers want to draw attention to the growing levels of obesity in society. In Norway, the prevalence of obesity among women in the reproductive age has increased two- to three-fold in the last generation. The World Health Organization (WHO), too, has said that 1.4 billion adults were overweight in 2008.

In India, one in every four babies is delivered via C-section. Public health experts blame this trend on unethical doctors as well as delayed motherhood among urban women. No studies have been done in India to link mode of delivery and the mother's weight.
