MUMBAI: The good cholesterol perhaps does more just keep your arteries clean. A new study in mice suggests that the good cholesterol may prevent aneurysms from forming in the body's biggest artery called the aorta.
The main function of the good cholesterol -- called high-density lipoprotein or HDL- is to prevent cholesterol from depositing on the walls of the arteries. HDL transports cholesterol from arteries to the liver, which throws out these deadly substances. But the new study done by University of London suggests that it can reduce and prevent aneurysms, which are more often than not fatal. Aneurysms are balloon-like projections that develop on the aorta sometimes because the walls become thin; it could be life-threatening if this balloon or aneurysm bursts. Surgery is the only option for treating aneurysms.
The study published in the American Heart Association's scientific journal Atherosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, found that elevating the amount of HDL in the abdominal area of the mice could reduce the size of the aneurysms. The study found that elevating the amount of HDL cholesterol in the abdominal area of the aortic artery in mice both reduced the size of aneurysms that had already grown and prevented abdominal aortic aneurysms from forming at all.
The researchers said that if HDL levels could be increased using a drug, it could act as a preventative measure against aneurysm. They added that it could emerge as a treatment option for patients and negate the need for surgery.
