CHANDIGARH: Thoracic Cancer surgery (chest surgery) is needed in more than 90 percent patients, who are in curative stage, but often because of lack of facilities available, the surgery is denied or delayed and patients reach the incurable stage.

Dr. Vijay Bansal, Consultant at Surgical Oncology department of Ivy Hospital here while speaking to media persons said thoracic cancer surgery is a specialized branch with new advances which involves minimal invasive surgical technique, recently introduced at Ivy Hospital.

He said since this branch is very much technically demanding and has a long learning curve. Most of the patients are denied curative treatment due to the lack of expertise and lack of facilities.

Elaborating on the same he said Ivy Hospital is offering advanced laparoscopic surgeries first time in this region. Along with this other complex laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgeries are also being done at Ivy hospital. This is possible due to state of the art OT facilities and latest instruments in the operation theatre, he added. He further elaborated that every kind of chest tumors are also being operated at Ivy hospital.

He added need of the hour is proper awareness of the patients and treating physician about the early detection of thoracic disease, high level of suspicion for chest cancer and awareness regarding availability of thoracic surgery facilities in the region.

According to Dr Vijay Bansal all kind of chest surgeries are being done in the region. He said generally these surgeries are done by opening the chest with big incision. But now, first time in this region surgery of food pipe in the chest (Esophagus) has been done by minimal invasive technique (thoracoscopically and laparoscopically).

Earlier this surgery was being done through big chest incision (20-25 cm) in which chest is open either by retracting the ribs or cutting the ribs. This leads to delayed recovery, lung infection and complications, longer ICU and ventilator requirement and post-operative pain.

Dr. Bansal said by minimal invasive technique (thoracoscopically and laparoscopically), chest is not opened. Whole surgery has been done though laparoscopic method in which 3-4 holes of half to one centimeter was made between rib spaces.

Citing an example he said recently whole of the food pipe operation was done with instruments. Patient recovery was very fast with only 1-2 days ICU stay. He added post-operation complications were very few and the patient was discharged early.
