On the eve of the G8 summit in London, UK foreign minister William Hague announced that the University of Oxford will host the Global Centre for Cyber Security Capacity that will work to make cyber space safer across the world. He said "India will be among the countries that will play a major role in the functioning and collaboration of this centre."
Speaking to TOI, professor Angela Saffe from the University College London, who is the programme director said: "We will have four working groups in the centre. Indian cyber scientists will be part of them and play an important role. We will meet in London in four weeks to finalise the composition of these groups."
Terrorists, rogue states and cyber criminals are among those targeting computer systems around the world. Around 93% of large corporations and 76% of small businesses reported a cyber breach in the past year. On average over 33,000 malicious e-mails are blocked at the Gateway to the Government Secure Intranet (GSI) every month in UK. These are likely to contain sophisticated malware.
UK is contributing £500,000 a year to this centre "to be a beacon of expertise in the forefront of cyber policy development."
India has been on the receiving end of serious cyber threats, facing one of its worst attacks in July 2012 when over 10,000 e-mail addresses of top Indian government officials were hacked in a single day including those working in the prime minister's office and the ministries of defence, external affairs, home and finance. In UK, 15 organizations are working together to combat cyber-crime.
