She is among the first patient in the country to receive a special stent to fix blockages that are, say doctors, located at those tricky branching of arteries.
Cardiologists at Fortis Hospital in Mumbai's Mulund locality claimed they had used a 'bifurcation stent' for the first time in India to help mend Rao's heart.
Rao, who has a long history of hypertension and diabetes, had suffered a heart attack in January and never realized it.
It was only when she became progressively breathless over the next couple of weeks that she went to local hospital.
"I was advised a cardiac bypass or angioplasty. But my sister who lives in Mulund asked me to seek a second opinion at Fortis Hospital," she told a press conference on Thursday.
Cardiologist Suresh Vijan, who operated on Rao, said she had a 90% blockage in the right coronary artery just before it bifurcated.
In medical terms, blocks at bifurcations of arteries are the most difficult to fix. "While fixing one branch, the other can get completed blocked," said Dr Vijan. Hence, he said the new stent — or scaffolding made of nitinol (nickel/titanium) — opens up right into the bifurcation. It keeps releasing medication for a year, helping keep the vessels open.
He said 20% of all heart patients with diabetes and hypertension have complex cardiac disease that would benefit from the new stents.
However, senior cardiologists in the city said that bifurcated stents were previously available in bare metals and hadn't been of much use.
"With regards to this drug-eluting bifurcated stents, we need to see the long term results before promoting it for all patients with multiple vessel disease," said a cardiologist who didn't want to be named.
