LONDON: A boob job has become common among Indians with nearly one in four cosmetic surgeries undertaken by both men and women in the country in 2011 were either to augment the breasts or reduce its size.

According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons — ISAPS' 2011 figures released on Friday, of the 1.9 lakh cosmetic procedures among Indians that required going under a knife, 46,232 were related to the breast.

Nearly 24,859 women underwent the breast augmentation surgery while 13,561 breast reduction surgeries were undertaken in India.

Nearly 7,800 men also went under the knife to get rid of that unwanted breast.

However, if you thought that cosmetic surgeries were uncommon in India, think again as the latest fi gures tell a different story.

India ranks among the top 10 countries (8th) that saw the highest number of cosmetic procedures in 2011 (4.66 lakhs including surgical and non-surgical), far ahead of countries which are usually associated with such procedures like United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, France and Spain.

In absolute numbers, liposuction to remove deposits of excess fat — a procedure than can slim hips and thighs, flatten the abdomen, shape the calves and ankles or eliminate a double chin was most common in India with 41,628 people getting it.

Indians also fl ocked in hordes to get a better looking nose, with 23,617 people undergoing a rhinoplasty.

Around 15,000 people got an abdominoplasty or a 'tummy tuck' while nearly one in 10 cosmetic surgeries among Indians were also to rectify sagging eyebrows, drooping upper lids and bags under the eyes with over 20,000 people going for a Blepharoplasty.

A butt job was also gaining popularity with 2913 women either getting a buttock lift or a buttock augmentation. Botox was the commonest non-surgical procedure among Indians with 97,611 people getting the injection to get the shine back on their wrinkled skin,

India was however home to only 3% of the world's cosmetic surgeons — 955 out of 31,894. US led the pack with 5950 plastic surgeons followed by Brazil 5024, China 2000, Japan 1831 and Mexico 1518 surgeons.
