'4 out of 10 cancers can be prevented through simple lifestyle changes'

CHANDIGARH: "Cancer prevalence is increasing in India partly because of increased life expectancy and adoption of western life style habits. However, four out of ten cancers can be prevented through simple lifestyle changes," stated Dr JD Wig, director & dead, department of general surgery at a private hospital based in Mohali.

Dr Wig was addressing over 90 senior citizens attending a special free Health Education Lecture.

Talking about cancer and its prevalence, Dr Wig said, "Cancer is set to become a major health problem in every region of the world. According to UN forecast, the global population will increase from 7 billion in 2012 to 8.3 billion by 2030. These changes translate to a predicted global burden of 20.3 million new cancer cases by 2030. Over the years, researchers have convincingly shown that lifestyle factors play a huge role in cancer incidence and mortality."

Reports from Canada have shown that having one drink per day may significantly increase the risk of cancer if this pattern is maintained over several years.

Being obese has been strongly linked to an increased risk of developing cancer of the breast (after menopause), colon, food pipe, endometrium and others.

"Obesity also increases the risk of leukemia, lymphoma and cancers of the liver and gall bladder. Lack of regular exercise is responsible notably for breast and colon cancer," he added

Dr Wig said, "One should stop smoking immediately. Consuming alcohol is more complex because low levels of alcohol consumption may increase the risk of many conditions and reduce the risk of the others, notably heart disease."

Emphasizing on the right way to eat, he said, "A cancer risk-reducing diet is to have lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grain, low intake of animal products like red meat, processed meat and low salt intake. To reduce the risk of getting cancer, the recommended amount of physical activity each week is 30 minutes of moderate activity like brisk walking 5 or more days per week or 20 minutes of vigorous activity like running 3 or more days per week."
